Keown: Keane would face stiff competition

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has raised concerns regarding Michael Keane's potential return to Manchester United at the end of the season.

The Burnley defender's stock has been on the up over the last few seasons as he helped the Clarets win the Championship and earn promotion to the Premier League, before contributing to their survival in the top flight this campaign.

The Red Devils youth graduate was sold to Burnley in 2015 by Louis van Gaal for £2.5m, but Jose Mourinho is reportedly hoping to bring Keane back to Old Trafford for £25m, a price tag that Keown believes could hamper the defender.

“I am concerned with the level of competition he would face at United from the likes of Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones," Keown wrote in his column in the Daily Mail.

“He also would have the pressure of the £25million price tag. Keane would no longer be a promising youngster coming through — the fans would be expecting to see a better player.

“But if he does play and all comes good, it would be very satisfying.”
