Raonic and Wawrinka through to Brisbane semis

Raonic and Wawrinka through to Brisbane semis

Top seeds Milos Raonic and Stan Wawrinka advanced to the semi-final of the Brisbane International on Friday.

The big-serving Canadian battled back from a set down to defeat Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 23 minutes on the hardcourts of Brisbane.

It was a checkered performance from Raonic, whose 35 unforced errors were balanced out by 23 aces.

Nadal would strike first, taking advantage of a series of errors to break and consolidate to go 4-2 up. Raonic would save five set points later in the set, but it was too little too late.

The Spaniard had his chance to pile the pressure on Raonic in the fourth game, but let two break point opportunities pass by. One break would be all Raonic needed to force a deciding set.

The Wimbledon finalist took that momentum in the final set, broke Nadal in the opening game and held serve without issue to close out the match.

The win earns Raonic a semi-final date with Grigor Dimitrov. The seventh seed edged rising star Dominic Thiem 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 earlier in the day.

In other results, second seed Wawrinka came back from a set down to battle past an inspired Kyle Edmund 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4.

The pair swapped service breaks late in the opening set to force a tiebreaker, which the Brit dominated. But Wawrinka got back on track in the second, just needing one break of serve to set up a deciding set.

The Swiss ace raced to a 5-2 lead in the final set to set up the match win. The victory books the US Open champion a clash with Kei Nishikori. The Japanese star blitzed past local hopeful Jordan Thompson 6-1, 6-1 in just 61 minutes.
